1920s Assuit Egyptian Revival Jacket [xs/sm/med]

$678.00

Incredibly special jacket made in the 1920s from a handmade Assuit shawl. Assuit is a traditional Egyptian technique of weaving using thin strips of hammered metal foil and cotton mesh. The narrow strips are carefully woven in and out of the small openings in the mesh and folded this way and that to create patterns with a glorious metallic sheen that reflect light with movement. Assuit shawls and garments were incredibly popular in the 1920s as part of the Egyptian Revival movement that followed the rediscovery of Kind Tut's tomb in 1922. The patterns are geometric by nature, but full of imagery and symbolism: this jacket depicts stylized ferns, fish and people. The jacket itself is beautifully constructed, fully lined with black silk crepe, closing at the front with a self covered button, and finished with ties at the neck that can be worn closed or loose (as shown). A rare piece of fashion history, and a magnificent addition to any modern wardrobe. Dresses up or down beautifully; wear it over a magnificent gown or with you favorite pair of high waisted jeans.
