Rare large scale 1920s tortoiseshell celluloid barette with 18k gold vermeil and paste stone details. The gold vermeil has a wonderful reflective quality that shifts slightly in the light. Unique design with an interesting mix of both art nouveau and art deco influences, featuring a central creature-like expressive face surrounded by intricate spirals and florals accentuated with paste stones set into the body of the barette. Fastens at the back with a long bar that fits securely in a brass pin. The entire barette is molded to follow the curve of the head, and sits beautifully in the hair when worn. Marked "18k gold" on the back; very likely French in origin.

Excellent condition. The celluloid is strong and resilient, and all paste stones are present. Only note is that there is some surface wear to the gold vermeil, but it is subtle and does not visually detract.
