1910s Asymmetrical Beaded Fringe Lamé Opera Coat [sm/med/lrg]

$8,664.00

Unbelievably rare mid to late 1910s silk and lamé opera coat made by none other than the legendary London department store Harrod's and clearly inspired by the groundbreaking designs of Paul Poiret. Sometime between 1913-1917, Poiret introduced the cocoon coat, an early break away from the slim fitting, corseted look that had dominated fashion for the last century. The asymmetrical drape and artful effect it had on the body was something entirely new and an expression of the dress reform movement of the early 20th century that lead to experimentations in fashion unlike anything the world had ever seen. Far and away pieces of this caliber are only ever found in museum exhibits and collections- this example is a unicorn like no other, seeming to have been purchased and then lovingly stored without having been worn a single time. It is absolutely immaculate, incredibly well made from the highest quality silk and lamé fabrics of the time. Hand made silk flowers sit at the front hip closure and center back at the nape of the neck, with unreal glass beaded fringe in black, silver and gold hanging from hand knotted silk across the asymmetrical lines of the body and down a loose, hanging panel that drapes across the back and moves with the wearer. As a dramatic finish, the coat is entirely lined in a rich fuchsia silk that gives a pop of color at the hem and cuffs. Truly the stuff of dreams; I am certain I will never find anything like it ever again. For the serious vintage collector- this is an heirloom worthy garment to cherish for a lifetime and beyond.

Absolutely incredible pristine condition. Appears entirely unworn and has likely not seen the light of day since it was purchased over 100 years ago. Museum quality in every sense of the term.

Note: This coat has not been cleaned and should only be entrusted to a dry cleaner with extensive knowledge of antique garments. However, it has no odor, appears unworn and presents very very cleanly. The coat can be safely steamed with care, and should be stored flat.
