c1890s Handmade Brussels Mixed Lace Rectangular Bridal Veil

Absolutely exquisite late 19th century handmade mixed Brussels lace bridal veil. This remarkable textile is one of the single most incredible articles we have ever had in the shop: constructed over thousands of hours of masterful lacemaking, both needle and bobbin work, veils such as these took many months, if not years, to complete. The artisans behind this masterpiece would have begun by creating each little motif, every flower, leaf, curve and dot entirely by hand using a hand woven "tape", articulated with tiny careful stitches to achieve the desired shapes. After thousands of the miniature motifs are crafted, they are then carefully arranged onto the base netting, and sewn into place with needle and thread, just as laborious a task as creating the motifs themselves. Survivors are rare, especially in such excellent condition and incredible scale, due to the extremely delicate nature of authentic antique handmade lace. This veil is more than just a bridal accessory, it is a true piece of textile art, an instant heirloom, echoing the artistry and skill of a lost world. The beauty of this treasure truly speaks for itself.

Excellent condition. A few small areas of damage have been appliquéd over with matching antique lace pieces, blending in entirely with the busy lace pattern. At Demetra, each garment is thoroughly cleaned, inspected for damage and professionally repaired with nearly a decade of experience in tailoring and working with antique materials. Each garment will arrive clean and ready to wear with little to no signs of age. 

Measurements:

This veil is a large rectangle shape. It can be worn in multiple ways: on the diagonal, as shown, for a dramatic train that maximizes the length and creates an incredible asymmetrical drape. For a more even, symmetrical and voluminous drape the comb can also be attached at the center front edge. We will include with purchase a silk wrapped comb that can easily be attached to the veil at your desired location and length.
