Remarkable, completely one of a kind 1930s gown made from hundreds of tiers of grosgrain ribbon gathered and sewn onto a base of cotton mesh to create an incredible scale-like mermaid texture effect. This piece is an amazing example of custom craftsmanship, likely made to order for an incredibly fabulous woman. It is beautifully articulated with peaked puffed sleeves, adorned with three dimensional flower appliqués, and larger medallion appliqués in the sweep of the flared mermaid skirt. There is a small layer of structural horsehair around the hem to add extra volume. Closes at the side with hidden snaps. One of the most beautiful examples of textural exploration in an antique garment to ever pass through the shop- you will never see another like it.
Excellent, carefully restored condition. Some ribbons have been reattached inconspicuously by hand. Some small areas of torn mesh on the inside of the dress have been repaired. All repairs are invisible when worn. A couple of the flower appliqués are missing, but there are so many that is does not show. Strong, wearable condition. Presents as mint when worn.
Note: material has some light stretch.
