1972 Halston Tie Dye Silk Chiffon Caftan [OS]
$4,857.00
Throughout the 1970s, Halston made major waves in American fashion through his groundbreaking minimalist work, and his elegant, easy to wear designs led to his quick rise to fame on the backdrop of the Studio 54 disco era. Between 1971-1972, Halston created an incredible line of handmade, one of a kind silk chiffon caftans, some hand painted and some tie dyed, resulting in his being credited with the popularization not only of the caftan silhouette, but the use of the tie dye technique in high fashion. No two pieces from this line are the same. Beautifully dyed in a riot of rich blues and browns, this remarkable example of Halston's early work showcases his genius control of fabric, drape and color sense. The caftan silhouette is simple to the casual glance, but incredibly precise upon closer inspection: the hem is ever so subtly curved downwards at the sides for a maximum amount of drape while still being easy to maneuver in high heels without catching the hem, the armholes are cut slightly below the top of the side seams to create natural drape at the cuffs, and the garment is entirely finished by hand with the label sewn into the side seam so as not to be visible through the sheer fabric when worn. The button closure keyhole can be worn in the front or the back, for a clean neckline or to accommodate statement jewelry. A museum worthy treasure, this incredible garment is more than just a beautiful gown, but an artifact of fashion history and an investment piece that will only continue to increase in value.
Excellent, near pristine condition. There is one pinhole at the back 2 inches up from the hem, and a few small, subtle pulls that get entirely lost in the drape. There are a few subtle tiny spots at one shoulder, but they appears to be a result of the natural dye process. Presents as mint condition.
