1920s Violet Silk Fringe Embroidered Cape
$2,439.00
Rare and unusual 1920s opera cape made from a richly hand embroidered piano shawl in a striking shape of rich violet. A genius period rework beautifully executed with master tailoring techniques- exquisite cording at the neckline, a beautiful raw silk lining and matching interior pocket. The collar is convertible, transforming from an elegant shoulder drape to a sculptural masterpiece with the use of just a couple hidden snaps- we love a piece that can be worn multiple ways. The hand knotted fringe drapes gracefully across the bottom hem, moving with the wearer. Closes at the center front with a large brass coat hook and bears a beautiful original silk label.
Excellent condition, minor surface wear. There are some tiny light spots in the embroidery- it seems very likely that the shawl was originally white (the popular color in the 1910s) and was dyed in the 1920s before the cape was made to achieve this fabulous jewel tone, and only a handful of fibers escaped the dye. Only noticeable upon very close inspection, and only adds to the historical nature of the garment. Presents beautifully.
