Remarkable early 1920s hand embellished French couture Grecian gown. Made in a soft dove grey silk from large panels of embroidery, including bird and floral motifs created in real metal bullion threads, and articulated with glass beads in art deco patterns. The styling of this gown is unique: it is made in a tabard style with long hanging pieces that make of the skirt, overlapped at the sides to create high leg slits that show as much leg as the wearer allows with movement and position. Worn with nothing underneath, the gown has a very sultry drape, but could also be paired with a full or half slip for modesty if desired. This dress has no closures, and slips on over the head with ease. So incredibly beautiful, made with unmatched craftsmanship, as is evident by the "Made in France" couture label at the nape of the neck.
This piece has been carefully restored, both historical and in house. When this dress was found, there were already some small period repairs in the form of lovely antique matching beads covering small pulls or pinholes. They are beautifully, done, most likely by the original owner. There are only a few areas mostly around the collar, and they read as part of the design. There is some very subtle discoloration around the bodice, but it is so subtle it does not show in low light. A couple scattered pinholes, small marks, a small tear at the hem, none of which show when worn. The shoulders, which showed some light wear and small tears when found have been carefully and mostly invisible stabilized with silk and hand stitching. Remarkably, the beading and embroidery are in nearly perfectly condition, with just some very minor loss in one or two places. This dress is in beautiful condition and ready to wear.
